Honestly, I have to make a blog post on this by itself because it was FANTASTIC!

Man, this past weekend was so much fun because of all the festivities of Miami Carnival. Every Columbus Day weekend, Miami hosts their annual Miami Carnival, which is a weekend event where every island in the West Indies gets to celebrate their culture. Growing up, it wasn’t easy coming from a country that no one in America knew about. My family is from Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic). This island has a population of 75,000 people (which is another reason why no one has heard of it). Now in NY, people know what Dominica is, well…. for the most part. However, growing up in CT, aint nobody knew what I was talking about to be honest lol. My whole life was carnivals and especially the Eastern Parkway, which is New York’s version of Miami Carnival. Furthermore, I even went to Caribana (Canada’s carnival), Cambridge’s Carnival (Mass.), and Dominica’s Carnival (which is bomb btw). Honestly, my whole life was a FETE (island slang for party). So, as my teen years approached, I was done with the island festivities…. UNTIL NOW……

Since moving to Miami, it was only right to add another carnival to the list, and to see what the hype is about at Miami Carnival….. let me tell yuh…. The HYPE IS REAL!!!

The first festivity for me was on Saturday which was Jouvert. This was my first Jouvert EVER. Jouvert is when people from the islands wake up super early haha (sunrise) to party/fete. Moreover, people also throw paint, baby powder, water, etc. So, this is clearly an event where you want to be underdressed. Honestly, this was so fun, and I definitely represented my country with my big cape/flag (I ordered it on Amazon). Shoutouts to my Bajan friend who also accompanied me to Jouvert.

Carnival was on Sunday, and OMG, what a JAM! Yal I don’t know where to begin because I will honestly write forever, so I’m just going to give everyone bullet points and pictures for the rest of this post:

  • I enjoyed a lovely Blue Hawaiian in a Pineapple (free refills too).

  • I got to jam to Asa Banton (Dominican artist), he was so good it’s not even funny!

  • I got to take pictures of others in costume(s) (yes I bought my camera and since I was in traffic due to parking, I got to take pictures).

  • A costumer gave me her Tiara.

  • The son from Power was there haha (Jouvert)!

  • The list of performers were amazing this year #Destra

  • At the end-- all the bands and carnival goers were vibing to the music (which was super fun).

  • Got to mingle with more Dominicans.

  • I couldn’t stay the whole thing because man I was tired from dancing haha, and I have to teach on Monday!

Long story short, I would do it all again, but man I want to do it with my family/friends up North. I highly recommend going, just seeing so many West Indians made my heart happy and it’s good to see a larger population of island folks in Miami.
